Follow Me Outdoors "Turkey hunting"

Get ready for some great adventures among these pages. I just started turkey hunting a few years ago and already it seems to be taking over my spring plans. Plus, there's not much else to hunt during that time of year.

There's nothing like hearing that outburst from an excited tom before sunrise.

A perfect type of hunt too because you can bring 'em in to your position if you set up in the right place.

That's why scouting is 90% of the hunt when it comes to turkey hunting, any hunting for that matter. When you don't have the luxury of being mobile, you had best know where they want to go. And portable blinds work really good when it comes to doing this. Turkeys tolerate pop up blinds very well, they won't shy away from it when the see it for the first time like deer will. I like to try to pop it up in some brush if I can help it though. But I've put it out in the open before and they still came in.

Above - My best yet tom, a red bearded Rio Grande from a hunt in Rock Island, Tx., on 4/6/07.

So far, I've taken most of my birds from inside my Double Bull blind. It allows me to stay in the chair, and the birds seem oblivious to in. I've had 'em come within ten yards of it without a second glance.
