The first time I made it out to the mountains of West Texas, I was hooked! For me to go mule deer hunting had been a long time coming, and now it's one of my favorite big game animals to chase after. The country is beautiful and a mature mule deer buck can be one of the hardest trophies to get a shot at.

I've been hunting mule deer for 10 years now and just recently began getting serious about putting in for tags in states like New Mexico, Colorado & Utah where the big boys roam. I'll keep you posted on how they all work out. There are also a few organizations that offer western big game hunts that I'm joining.

Coming from flat land country, getting the opportunity to spend time in the mountains is a special treat. Finding a lease with lots of deer and an accessible camphouse is icing on the cake. Well we found both in the area north of I-10 west of Ozona, Tx.

One of the reasons I love mule deer hunting is the jeeping. The scenery is gorgeous and you get to see a lot of it from a jeep. You're a lot more mobile and it's more exciting of a hunt when you can ride around with friends all day looking for the "big one". And if the weather turns too windy or too cold we can load up in the truck and drive the oilfield roads. I've taken 3 out 4 bucks already from the back window of a pick-up.

Notice the pvc pipe we added on the passenger side to give me some support and keep me from falling out. Without a door, some kind of bar or strap is necessary for stability.

I also use a memory foam cushion or piece of sponge to sit on. Bumping around all day on a jeep seat wouldn't be too good for the skin.

Other than that, the only missing piece of the puzzle is something like a soft coat or foam pad placed on the dash so I can lean forward and shoot off of.
