Hunter Profile - Don Christensen

My name is Don Christensen. I am 40 years old and live in Northwestern Wisconsin. I grew up in Southern Minnesota and have always loved to hunt and fish. As I grew older, these interests expanded into some fantastic experiences all over the country. Unfortunately, in the late 1990s I was diagnosed with MS. My love for the outdoors, however, was not phased a bit, only altered a little. The following ramblings describe what has happened to me and how I have resonded to the things I came across in the path before me. This is the rest of the story... A few years ago, I created afarcry.info and a forum for disabled hunters called The Back Forty. |

Well my new found disability created a pretty major stumbling block to the activities that I once enjoyed. I had gone from spending weeks hiking or canoeing in the wilderness to the point of using a wheelchair just to get from one place to another. These physical limitations, meanwhile, while slowing me down a great deal, did not stop me from living. Instead, I figured out that I had to work a lot harder than the average bear to accomplish most usual tasks. I was willing. And I put in all the work I had to to prove they were still do-able. They were. Now every trip to the woods to hunt or lake to fish was extra special to me. Now I could see just how much of a blessing it is just to be able to go. Just to get out with friends and family. Continuing on, I had worked with delinquent youth all of my adult life and now was forced to go on the dreaded "disability". Disability, for me, meant a lot of time on my hands with not very much to do but twiddle your thumbs. Well, I wasn't a thumb twiddler. I needed to find something useful to do. |

With the help of Babe Winkelman Productions, I was able to attain the equipment I needed (voice recognition software and an extra phone line) in order to do something positive. Something just to get me started in the direction I wanted to go in. Any direction really. Now my goals are twofold: The first is finding outfitters that can accommodate disabled sports-people and communicating that info through Babe Winkelman's Dream Trips. |

The second is my website, afarcry.info. I want to work as a "clearing house" for information for disabled sportspeople to call or email me to get any information they. Please feel free to contact me with questions and/or comments, or if you just want to swap some stories. My number is (715) 635-7870. Below lay a few pics of my adapted scooter that I have rigged up for hunting. And one of my favorite accessible deer blind. I think I might could live in that thing if it had cable TV. Remember, most of these adaptations can be custom made for very cheap if you get the materials yourself and find someone to help you put them together. Thankfully, there's usually a good supply of both. |
