Argentina Dove Hunting

Thousands of doves were pouring into a stand of dead trees when we drove in for our first of 4 hunts. It was July in Argentina, which is winter down there. Their seasons are exactly opposite of ours in Texas. It was clear and cold that day, with winds blowing about 20-25mph. With so many birds though it didn't matter.

My bird boy/gun loader, Frederico, and I found a nice spot out of the wind where most of the flights were turning back into the gusts to make their final approach.

They were setting themselves up perfectly for me as I started to gun. Doves flowed steadily all day long, in and out and from every direction. I shot all day long, stopping only for lunch and a quick rest in an old ranch house nearby. The entire countryside seemed alive with birds, mostly eared-doves and the many hawks that were chasing downed birds.

I shot more doves in 2 days than I had in the past 10 years of wing shooting in the states. There is no substitute for that kind of quantity if you're looking to become a better shooter. Practice makes perfect right?

This is a mess of birds. The product of one afternoon of shooting in a hunter's paradise. There are about 600 doves and 2 blue pigeons in this pile, which is just as many as I personally took down in 2 days of hunting. Not too shabby. But I tell you that that was plenty for me. Some guys show up and shoot 1500 birds in 1 day. That's crazy. I definitely had my fill.

All in all it was a great trip to a beautiful country. I only hope that I get a chance to do it again someday.

If so, it'll be to duck hunt, goose hunt, pigeon hunt & then maybe go after a red stag.
